Speaker and Networking Event with Nevak Rogers, Acting Director of Content at TVNZ

The third Speaker and Networking event of 2023 took place on Wednesday, 16th of August, at KPMG Auckland, featuring Nevak Rogers.

With over 25 years of media experience, Nevak is a seasoned professional who has made significant contributions to the industry. From her early days as a print and radio journalist for Mana magazine and RNZ’s Mana News after studying journalism at MIT, she transitioned into television and worked as a news and current affairs reporter for TVNZ, TV3, and MTS. 

Currently the Acting Director of Content at TVNZ, Nevak is dedicated to normalising Māori and Pacific Island stories and languages through innovative strategies, including the development of a Rautaki Māori and Cultural Integrity framework for local content.

“I jumped at the chance to be part of the revolution at TVNZ – to help tell Māori and Pacific Island stories and normalise our languages and cultures throughout Aotearoa by helping to develop a Rautaki Māori for TVNZ alongside a Cultural Integrity framework for all our local content.”

The fireside chat was moderated by Multiethnic Young Leaders Member, Vira Paky. Vira is a first-generation Congolese-New Zealander, raised and based in Tāmaki Makaurau. She is a Youth Engagement professional  and has worked in various sectors including health, refugee support, and employability. With a background in storytelling, she’s an award-winning public speaker, activist, arts practitioner, and writer. Vira served as an MC and was part of the working group for the 2022 National Multiethnic Young Leaders Summit, organised by Multiethnic Young Leaders NZ.

During the fireside chat, Nevak spoke authentically and openly, encouraging the audience to ‘believe in future you.’ She emphasised the significance of mana-enhancing relationships, being of service, and adding value. She stressed the importance of never forgetting to open doors for others, ensuring you bring people up with you, and approaching failure without fear – advocating for a mindset of failing fast and frequently.
